Bowel Cancer Information for Healthcare Professionals
  • International Studies have shown screening with an FOBT reduces the mortality rate between 15 and 33%.1-3
  • Early detection for Bowel Cancer results in a 90% chance of survivability. Only 40% of cancers are being detected early.
  • InSure® is a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) designed in Australia specifically for screening the average risk population for Bowel Cancer. This newer immuno-technology replaces the guaiac (chemical) test process which is still used by many of the older FOBT's. Clinical trials conducted in Australia showed, InSure was preferred by 89% of the patients over the comparative test which required faecal handling
  • The InSure test is ten times more sensitive to blood than other commonly used guaiac tests, which means cancers and lesions will be picked up earlier
  • The InSure specificity is 98%. It is an immunochemical test which identifies blood specific to the large bowel, which means a low false positive rate and the patient does not need to modify their diet or medications.
The InSure Bowel Cancer Service supports the GP Preventative Health Programs by:
  • supplying the kits (at no cost to the practice)
  • providing a customer service support on a call free number
  • sending result notification to both doctor and patient
  • sending a reminder to the patient to screen the following year.

Testimonials
Dr Cameron of Carlton's Cranbrook Family Practice, recognised there was a low profile regarding Bowel Cancer prevalence and invited all his patients over 50 years to do an InSure® screening test. More than 36% of these patients completed the test. Thirty patients required further investigation, with 13 needing polyp removal and cancer was detected in one. "None of these patients had symptoms indicating anything was wrong and without the test they would still be unaware of their potentially life threatening conditions," Dr Cameron said.
